world Press Freedom Day  commemoration

The World Press Freedom Day ,every year commemorated on the 3rd  May,  will this year be celebrated through a number of activities including live streaming conference and a handing over of community radio equipment to Quthing Community.

The Live streaming conference, supported by US Embassy will take place  at American corner, State library on the 3rd May,2016 from 1330hrs to 1500hrs. The conference  will be on issues of journalistic integrity, media sustainability and will be addressed by a renowned reporter Glen Kessler who is a seasoned investigative journalist, businessman, and Washington Post fact-checker columnist.

On the Saturday the 7th May, MISA Lesotho will hand over the community radio equipment to Quthing community at an event characterized of cultural diversity and multi-linguistic nature of the district. The event is expected to be officiated by the District Administrator of Quthing District.

World Press Freedom day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993 following a recommendation adopted at the 26th session of UNESCO’s General Conference in 1991. The international day, among others seeks to remind the media and its consumers of the fundamental principles of press freedom. It is also a platform to evaluate press freedom around the world and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.

This year’s theme is;

“ACCESS TO INFORMATION AND FUNDAMENTAL FREEDOMS:THIS IS YOUR RIGHT!”
